Revisions, Revisions

Editor’s revision letter has now joined Agent’s revision comments and I am vanishing into the depths of Crown to work on the first level of revision, the deep structural, or foundation…and then the connection between that and the top level (some rooms, as mentioned before, are being added to the whole)…and then the top or finish level.  In other words, I will be scarce in this space, so if something comes up you think I should notice and Deal With (let’s hope nothing does), please use the mail link on my website.    Play friendly.

Meanwhile I made it to the city today to sign shelf stock at a B&N, as well as fill out forms in advance of a doctor’s visit Thursday,  buy a pair of jeans, and have lunch with my webguru.   Clerk said the hardcover had been selling steadily there, and they had a row of mm paperbacks, plus the Deed trade paperback, so I was a happy camper  (the store’s off my usual route and takes some tricky turns to get to, so having books there to sign was a nice reward.)

If any of you in Oregon happen to attend the Oregon Bach Festival concerts, our choir director (who got us through the Mozart Mass in C-minor despite all difficulties including the Flower Lady)  will be singing with the festival chorus.  Dunno if he’s got a solo this year or not, but if you happen to see “David Stevens” on the program notes–that’s the one.

Also if any of you are coming to WorldCon in San Antonio, let me know–we should try to get together.

(And now, in the still of the night, the author–with her wet hair wrapped in a red towel–once more addresses the revision file for Crown and tries to get some more work done…)

Doctor’s visit Thursday – is that for the neck spasms you mentioned a few posts ago? We care about you. Put yourself first.

I will be at WorldCon working for Scott in the Art Show as he was kind enough to come up and work for me last year (Thank you for recommending him!) Since you signed the huge box-o-books last year, I should just have Limits with me. See you in August 🙂

I’m planning on being at Worldcon helping for a shift in volunteer support. Still need to get my room reservation and maybe a roommate though.
I guess I better get to work on that.

Hey Elizabeth: In case you didn’t notice, I will be at Worldcon, with a bagfull of Lammes Candies. Because Great Authors sometimes require chocolate and Defense Against Facehuggers. (secret class available at Hogwarts, only to the Prodigiously Published) DRW

Looking forward to it, DRW, esp. the dark chocolate and emergency facehugger support.

Richard: Yes, doctor visit is for neck problems since last August. Just not going away on its own. Hoping for PT and training advice to fix it and avoid future similar probs. Hence choice of sports medicine doc.

    Good luck with the doctor.

In my eyes, trying to get the body to help itself is better than taking pills, so I hope your doctor finds some nice preventive therapy for you.

Anyway, I am sure dark chocolate helps. 🙂

I will definitely be at WorldCon, and hope to get a chance to sing “Song for Absent Friends” for/with you [I’ve made sheet music…]

Well…I had cervical X-rays that revealed a potential problem…so I’m to get an MRI next. Doc said “X-rays show some damage–ever been in a car wreck?” Me: “No, but I’ve come off of horses.” Doc: “That can do it.” Doc doesn’t want to prescribe PT of any kind for neck until certain there’s no dangerous instability.

Once the MRI’s done, there’ll be a treatment plan, and she thinks my goal for next summer is reasonable. Assuming the MRI doesn’t show something really dire.

I will say that having your neck probed for “does this hurt” and then having to pose for the X-ray in positions I normally don’t assume and then driving back out of the city traffic…led to a tension headache of large size. When the neck is unhappy, ain’t nobody happy. (Anyone who doesn’t get the reference, ask.)

I am cleared for the daily bike ride, even though riding the bike is what triggered the pain. It’s worth it in terms of the improvements in cardio and endurance. Last year this time I couldn’t sing two services on Sunday, walk up one flight of stairs without stopping on the landing, etc. Neck pain is a reasonable trade for being able to stand up and sing the Mozart Mass in C, do two services on Sunday, go up stairs (more than a flight), and walk miles.

    Now–back to revisions.

Well, let’s pray that the MRI reveals nothing serious enough to prevent PT.

Wondering whether you tried acupunctur. Sometimes it can do wonders.

Go get some dark chocolate meanwhile. 🙂

So for a quarter of a century, Elizabeth, ever since the flying dismount facing the wrong way you mentioned recently in the “hand gallop” discussion, you’ve been going about with a half-broken neck?

No, because I didn’t lose the inch of height back then. That, I think, began about 3-4 years ago, about when (IIRC) I began to hear some odd noises in my neck and occasionally feel like C-1 was “trapped” at the base of the skull. My thought was “O rats, osteoporosis!” but then other things hit the fan and I had no time.

I suspect the damage was cumulative over time, a little more from each injury, the way concussions are supposed to be. I guess the sideways falls, from both horse and bike, could have done damage as well as the head-on, head-back falls. But the MRI should show more.

I hope the neck problem works out, with a minimum of intervention.

When I was a teenager, elderly ladies would tell me that posture is everything and you will pay later. Unfortunately, now that I am over 50, I realize that they were right. This is especially true of my neck and shoulders, which seem vulnerable to the position of my computer.

    The bike benefits sound good.

GinnyW: My mother told me that, too. But so many people told me I was too tall for a girl…and clumsy…and why didn’t I do something about (hair, skin, clothing, etc.) that I pretty much gave up. Fine, OK, you don’t think I’ll ever make it, go away and let me study.

Elizabeth: My reaction exactly. Also, the bad posture was compounded by being very nearsighted most of the time, so I was constantly bending too close to the desk (in school) or book (at home).

Over time, and with age, there is stress that distorts the cartilege that should cushion joints and vertabrae, however, and the result is pain, and sometimes disability.

GinnyW: Yup, nearsighted, leaning close…and now the cataract that leads me into the same bad habit. Ah, well, the old “Age isn’t for wimps” adage.
