Relapse

Had a relapse in the health side of things this week and haven’t been out of the house yet.   Nothing to worry about, but another “something going around” which on top of the partly-recovered state last weekend meant…flop.   If I were a laser cannon, my energy charge would have been listed as “expended” in the Weapons Officer’s display.  I’d hoped the Tuesday blah was just the change in weather, but…no.   Husband is also down with whatever it is (at least he doesn’t have whatever I had the week before.)

I have been able to make some progress on the socks and one scene of Book V, though it’s a lot less than I’d planned for.     In that scene, Arvid…oh, wait, that’s a spoiler.  Well…sobeit.  In that scene Arvid uses talents developed in another line of work to save lives.    Arvid sneaking across roofs and into buildings is always fun to write.    I haven’t yet figured out quite how he’s going to manage what he’s going to manage, because that requires more oxygen than is currently available to my lungs on a regular basis.  But he’s in there.

I had to give him something fun to do because I decided that a long stretch of Arvid being snarkily superior to someone teaching him Girdish law was not actually that plot-relevant.  Fun, but not going anywhere.

I hope you recover properly soon. As I get told from time to time, don’t overdo things.

Concerning Arvid, perhaps “.. things that are good to have and days that are good to spend are soon told about, and not much to listen to; while things that are uncomfortable, palpitating, and even gruesome, may make a good tale, and take a good deal of telling anyway.”

    (Tolkien “The Hobbit”).

I’m hoping you are feeling much better soon, and also your family. When my daughter had the flu a few weeks ago, she stayed with a friend during that time, to keep away from my husband. He didn’t catch the flu.

I am very grateful that we were able to meet you at Chicon this summer, and thank you for your kind words of support. Kris’s cancer has moved to both lungs, and the doctor expects him to last no more than two to four months. His interests and abilities range from alchemy to computers and robots to theology to Latin translations to music to history to SF, and he can remember the names of every actor in every film he has ever seen, and that’s a lot of films. Who is going to fix the plumbing or the computer? It will give a new meaning to the ghost in the machine.

I haven’t been reading or posting for awhile (except books by his bedside), because there are so many details that need to be done, no time to do them, and as you might guess from when I am posting in my time-zone (EST), I haven’t been getting much sleep. I would love it if Paks, Arvid, and even some stuffy Girdish Marshals would just show up and cure Kris. Well, the good thoughts are helpful anyway, and I appreciate prayers too. Thank you for your good wishes for him.

Get well soon Elizabeth, sorry you’ve got another dose of the dreaded lurgy, up the vitamin C and as the French say, Courge! Weather has turned cold here, what we call brass monkey weather, thank heavens I’ve got an electric windscreen scraper as everything was frozen solid… looks like the cold weather has arrived – just as all the plants decided it had to be spring as it has been so warm.

I am so happy that Arvid lives to Book V.

I don’t suppose the non plot relevant snarking at a Gird’s man could make its way into the snippets/outtakes? please please please 😀

Elizabeth D. – you and all your family have our prayers and sympathy.

I can definitely see Arvid exhibiting a superior knowledge of Girdish law, but I can’t imagine seeing him gain it. I think I will enjoy the virtuosity over the roofs more. Now who would he need to rescue?

Take it easy, the flu bug that is going around seems to be a nasty one. Plenty of tea (with cookies?), chicken soup, and rest, rest, rest. Regrettably, writing is more strenuous than it looks.

    Just a thought for Arvid.
He should not think that he is superior to everyone else, as he only angers those of us who are.He should think about what happened to Paks when she was learning to fight with an axe. Please get well soon we miss you

Patricia: None of us should think we’re superior to everyone else, but some of us do some of the time. And so Arvid. Remember he doesn’t know Paks’s history in training–at all. He wasn’t there, and he hasn’t spent time with her reminiscing about it since. Arvid has been considering himself Special for a very long time–it’s a hard habit to get over. Esp. hard to get over when the easiest change is complete reversal, to thinking oneself worse than anyone else.

I’m working on getting well. Definitely better today–I just hope it lasts.

I hope it lasts, too! Please take care of yourself; I’ve heard that the bugs going around this year are particularly nasty and persistent.

And Elizabeth D-my heart hurts for you, and you will all be in our prayers!

Elizabet D. my warmest sympathies. I remember going through a similar time with my late beloved (more than 10 years ago!). There are so many things to think about and attend to, and care for yourself can get shorted. Sometimes it has to be that way, but do try to remember that you need care too. My best wishes for a peaceful passage and a fruitful grieving time for you. Warm hugs.

Thank you so much to everybody. We met other fans at Chicon; it was a treat all around, one of the best memories.

Arvid certainly lived for himself for a long time. He knew Paks in Brewersbridge, at a very interesting crossroads in her life. Arvid is the one who spies on the spies, taking the art of observation to the ability to discern what those in power have forgotten to see.

Did Arvid take up Dattur’s offer to teach him about the Law? If so, he might have taken on something of the gnomish sniffiness about the Girdish law: the same sort but not of the same quality as the Law.
May I second the request for some more snippets or out-takes? The January doldrums, as well as the cold (and snow forecast here for Friday), need something warm to cheer us up!
I’m looking forward to finding out what happened to Arvid Junior. As well as, ooh everything else, of course.
