Another Checkpoint

Yesterday’s 2700+ words and today’s 2000+ have rolled over the writer-odometer another satisfying amount.   More important for your reading enjoyment, Stuff has been Happening to multiple characters, some of whom are being revealed as not what I thought they were.  You may be smarter than I am and guess earlier that X is not really X but R’.    Or not.

I’m sure some of you want to know the current length, which at this point I don’t mind sharing–though keep in mind that the final length of the first draft is not the final length of the book.   This is only a signal that we’re heading into the home stretch now.

150,058 is the current length.  That will change before bedtime.  At 2000 words/day, it should hit 160,000 next Monday.  But in the meantime, I need to spend time starting to re-organize it, putting things in chronological sequence.  That’s never an easy task.   I’m going to see if I can get it printed on 3-hole paper somewhere else (rather than babysitting the printing on my old inkjet)–then it can move into the “sorting binders” with sticky notes to indicate chapter and POV (by color).   That will give me a preliminary order (a few things always seem to need moving after the last bits are written.)

What’s missing so far is any sign of a satisfying arc-ending for this volume.  And a title.   But when I get it laid out, some of that should come clear.
