It’s Not Really Goofing Off

Today we had no choir duties, so we went out on the land and did stuff.   Transplanted water irises out to various wet spots, hoping they’ll naturalize and be beautiful and also provide a place for spread-wing damselflies to lay their eggs (they oviposit into emergent vegetation of the right kind.  Irises are ideal.)

Worked on trails…mostly trimming with lopping shears, but also noting that the Deer Ford trail isn’t safe (I found that out by slipping and having to scoot the rest of the way down  on the seat of my jeans), the Gravel Ford bank needs some reinforcement,  the seasonal  “spring” is still running at Deer Ford.   Richard mowed out the entrance meadow, which is one of our “pocket prairie” remnants, and a seed source–it gets mowed once a year, midwinter.  Did some birdwatching, some moving-water-listening and looking,  some noticing of what plants are showing “springward” behavior (winter forbs in the sunnier areas–already on the move.)

And of course I was thinking about the book in my backbrain.   Came in tired and stiff, but more clear-headed.  I think.   For anyone interested in some pictures from the day, take a look at the 80 acres blog.
