Site Stuff

Some of you may have noticed the site was offline for awhile last night.   It may be off for a bit today, too, because of some problems with a plug-in and the need to update the basic software and the plug-in.   Also, my comment database is getting large enough to be almost-a-problem at the host site, so I’m going to start pruning it (on my other sites as well.)   So some stuff will disappear, and the site itself may be unavailable for brief periods as Things Change.  It will be back, functioning better and with a smaller “waistline,” when I’m done tinkering with it, which I hope will be finished today.   (The host end help I’ll need for some of this will happen at their convenience, so depending on their other workload it could be any time.)

Please be patient, and I’ll let you know when all the tinkering’s over with.

This would explain why I could not post a comment yesterday. Good luck with the make-over; hope it all goes smoothly.

There’s been a spam bombing thing going on, spam far above the levels for the last six months and something changed the settings on the spam blocker. So today’s been updating the software, running scans to catch any malware (and there was some), rechecking stuff–luckily a lot of this isn’t hands-on for me, though last night’s problem was hands-on for the hosting site’s personnel. I’m not sure we’re really clean yet, and I still need to completely delete the blog spam-catcher plug-in and then re-install it, because resetting the settings didn’t get rid of the current spam queue. But progress, and we’re up for now.

There’s been a lot of nastiness going on in a number of internet vectors the past week or so. This isn’t even in the first five I’ve heard of this week.

I’ve left the last task for tomorrow, to see how things are running without it. I think a software update earlier in the week caused some of my problem, but not all of it. Sitehost is fighting fires on several fronts I understand. But I need to be more vigilant so as not to add another fire to their load.

I nearly emailed you that it was down, but it reappeared. I just assumed that UK morning might have been a US maintenance window.

    Hope it all goes smoothly.

Maintenance was indeed being done on it in the local night.

Sorry about the spammers, they make it difficult for the whole community. I hope that they do not crowd the writer brain too much. Your stories are much more fun!

I need to set up a given time each day to work on de-bloating the spam queue and the comments file. Today I spent hours at it (with breaks) and shoved the spam queue down several thousand, and the comments much less (because I want to save the deleted comments to an external hard drive here–so I had to set up the receiving file, and then once a brief power outage deleted the work I’d just done and I had to do it over, when the thunder finally passed.) There’s something over 2000 more items in the spam queue than when I left it earlier today.
