Old Grudges Die Hard

Here’s a very short snippet (there are spoiler-cooties all over what comes before and after.)    But the enmity between some elves and some humans is still going strong in Lyonya and not all the secrets have been excavated even yet.   This comes early in the second third of the book, at a point where Kieri is increasingly frustrated at not being able to access all of his innate magery.  Recall that he has inherited magery from three sources: elves, magelords, and Old Humans.   At this point he is able to access two of the three–elven and magelord, but needs the third.  Where: Chaya, Lyonya

Who:  Caernith is one of the western elves left to help Kieri and Arian with elven magery and also protect them from iynisin attack, if there’s another one.  The elves are not King’s Squires, but they stick close to Kieri for his protection, especially if he leaves the palace.   Caernith is speaking to Kieri, in a conversation about magery and its potential uses.

……………………………………………………

“No age is easy,” Caernith said.  “But this one seems like to be exceptionally hard.  It is our shame that we cannot help you learn what you need to know.  If there were Old Humans yet in this world–”

We are not gone.  We do not talk with elf-kind.

…………………………………………………..

Kieri knows that voice.  If Kieri really wants Old Human magery, he’s going to have to deal with the same one he met underground at Midwinter in Echoes.

    Intriguing. And a little spooky.

Genko, I agree with spooky. A Halloween snippet for sure. This voice has been ambivalent toward Kieri – at least in the first midwinter encounter. Kieri has certainly tried to make peace and settle this spirit or spirits, but I wonder whether he has really succeeded? I am pleasantly anticipating seeing more of that story line now.

    Elizabeth,
Myself and a couple of others here at my base in Afghanistan would like to send you something from over here. We feel a bit of a kinship to you as a fomer military member. If you could send an adress where you accept packages, that would be great.

Just remember you can always send things to an author c / o their publisher.

That address always works without compromising anything.

Hi, Jim, and thank you all for the thought. You can reach my email address from http://www.elizabethmoon.com/contact.html and then I could email you. I wouldn’t be sharing the mailing address here. (Not, I hasten to add, from any distrust of the known group of Paksworld blog readers, but what’s online can be seen by anyone, including mischief makers. Like many people I’ve had threats.)

I see up above that someone suggested sending a package to my publisher, which also can work (and might even be faster–I dunno what the actual mail routes are.) If you wanted to go that route, it would be c/o Del Rey Books, Random House, 1745 Broadway, New York, NY 10019.

Stay as safe as you can; all of you over there are in my thoughts, and not just at this time of year.

    Elizabeth,
    Email Sent.
Not sure how long it will take the package to reach you once shipped. It could take 2-3 weeks depending on flights. They have a high priority for mail getting here, not so much on mail getting out.

    Spooky is the word.

Jim and mates, you, like all soldiers, are in my prayers. Come back home safe and sane!

Box is sent. It was sent Priority mail. Not sure what that means for getting out of Afghanistan, but once it hits the States it should be pretty fast. Guessing on how fast boxes get over here, I would guess 7-10 it should be in your PO Box. We hope you enjoy it.

I see no need (on the evidence up to the end of Limits) to doubt that the elf caught murderously pursuing private ambitions was acting alone. Whatever skulduggery took place when elves raised the mound in the Grove is another matter, though – the traitor was (self-proclaimed) too young to be blamed for that – so if not the Lady’s own doing it would seem to require a faction with their own agenda, one the traitor largely shared – not traitors, not murderers, just devious.

This snippet is from Crown of Renewal, which will be out in May 2014.

Richard, I agree with you concerning the elf who was murderously pursuing her own ambitions – I don’t think it quite connects to the issues with the Old Humans who were displaced when the mound was raised. But I do wonder about some other connections/issues.

I think I should air them in spoiler space, not here though.

    Hi Ms. Moon,

I am a huge fan of all of your work. One thing that might make this website a little better, though its pretty great would be if you had a section on the homepage that listed upcoming works, or works in progress and their tentative release dates. It’s hard to keep checking through old blog posts to see how much longer I have to wait for my fix. If it’s not feasible I understand, I just thought I would make the suggestion.

Hi, Simon. Welcome to the group. I’ll talk to my web guru about that and see how much it would cost. This site is newer than my main website, which is where we’re used to putting the “coming soon” notices on the front page. (Looking at that site again, I see that our news page is WAY out of date. I thought we fixed that in the spring. Apparently not. Sigh. More work…)

If you follow me on Twitter (@emoontx) though most of what I do there might not interest you–I retweet a lot of things I find interesting–I do always post updates about new Paksworld posts and book releases on Twitter. That’s the fast-track.

At any rate, nothing new will be coming out until 2014. Book V of Paladin’s Legacy, Crown of Renewal releases in May. I don’t have a date for any short fiction yet, but it won’t be before 2014 and will probably be later than the book.

*sigh* I should quit reading snippets. They make me feel like it is nearly Christmas, and yet it won’t arrive until months from now… :/

However, I am totally enthralled with some of the possibilities revealed by these snippets. Argh…

Thank you for sharing things with us! 🙂

Two weeks without a post… Sigh. And six months before Crown is available. A snippet would really make a long, dark and cold Fairbanks weekend a lot easier to take.

Sure, an author has other things to do. I understand. If you’ll excuse me now, I’m off to attend a pity party.

So…answering questions and writing comments doesn’t count? Well…darn. Yes, busy times are upon me. I’ll try. It’ll probably be shorter than some of the answers to comments.

#21: the fiends typo has given me a vision – when receiving a parcel that might contain Crown, look closely at the delivery firm’s logo, and do not accept any package from FiendEx or DVL (we have DHL in the UK, don’t know about the US). Above all, do not sign for it with the pen the delivery person will offer you – it has a cunningly concealed sharp edge to cut your finger unobtrusively. The form itself – or handset these days – that you sign is only a prop; it is a drop, or even only a smear, of your blood on the pen as you sign that counts.
