The August Marathon

August has been (on the publishing schedule I was on before) the month to charge ahead full speed and has been producing the most bang for the buck, wordage wise, usually on the back of a pretty solid production in July.   So far, as of August 2, this month is not holding up well.

I know I haven’t been around here much in the last week or so–just answering some comments–but the time has come to yank myself off other online venues as well.   It’s so much easier to post on websites and blogs and give other people advice on writing…and so much harder to do the same wordage on my own book.  But as Neil Gaiman said in his wonderful speech, the time comes when you realize you’re using up your professional time and energy and imagination…on something other than the work you’re here to do.

So on the assumption that everyone here has read Echoes by now, and thus snippets from somewhere in Limits of Power that reveal some of what happened in Echoes won’t be spoilers…I’m going to switch to hunting up a few snippets a week for you and not blather on about other things.  Really.   At least not much.  At least not until after the day’s wordage is done.

I need  to get serious wordage on the books in the next 27 days, before leaving for WorldCon.

Sometimes its much easier to think, imagine, and give good advice when its someone else’s business. At least, I find it so. Then, I realize that I actually could contribute something of my own, and get back to my business. I am looking forward to the snippets.

I call it “Not Working Hard.” It’s working very hard on other tasks rather than the task at hand. And I am a past master. Sometimes all you can do is wait until the main task is interesting again.

On the other hand, I have a photo show tomorrow afternoon and I still haven’t written the photo captions. I work very well under pressure…

    Wickersham’s Conscience @2

I know the system well. I believe it is sometimes called constructive procrastination.

It is as we all know much easier to give advice than to act on it. Thank you for the promise of snippets. That will keep us even happier than idle speculation, advice-giving, and chattering about whatever.

    Blessings

    Ginny,
Sometimes? I would say always. 🙂

    Elizabeth,
I know the feeling. just now, I’m allowing myself a peep in here, having finished one of the two eulogies I need to write today, at the same time rewarding myself and delying the unavoidable …

Rolv: I haven’t ever written a eulogie, and two in one day must be very hard. In not-quite-answer to your other question, the beliefs about elvenhomes held by elves vary from one group to another.
