But Not For Long…A-Kon looms

This Thursday I take off again, this time on a shorter train trip to A-Kon in Dallas.  A-Kon is technically within driving distance, but driving up I-35 from here and then trying to negotiate Dallas traffic is no way to arrive at a convention with the energy left to engage.  Hence, the train.   I’m going up on Thursday, back on Monday.    My friend Lee Martindale (writer, editor, and several other hats, including–as of now–publisher)  is launching Ladies of Trade Town at A-Kon, an anthology of stories about, well, the trade.)   I wrote the introduction.   Many of the stories’ authors are coming to the launch, and so am I.  And some other people I’ve been wanting to see.   I’ve never been to A-Kon, so it’ll be a new experience for me.

What this means, however, is another hiatus in blog posts here (or a very short one or two) because I’m still not really recovered and re-organized from the Balticon trip, and I need to write a lot of words and do essential shopping (that Mac-horse’s colic prevented last trip) to set up for the rest of the summer.    My watch band is about to fall off and the watch needs a new battery;  I need some essential (but not discussable) garments;  the pantry is low on some basic supplies, etc.

And though I made progress on Book IV on the Balticon trip, I didn’t make enough, and really need to press ahead.   So there will be gaps in coverage here.  I know I haven’t responded to all comments (or all my email, some of which MUST be done before I leave again, and ditto with the actual mail.)

How do you decide how much travel and publicity work you will do? How do you balance your writing and the other professional demands to stay productive? What advice would you give other successful writers?

Do you know what day you sent it? Due to the Balticon trip and being out of internet contact on the train before and after I have a huge load of email I still haven’t plowed through. Or just send me another one at info@elizabethmoon.com and I’ll reply.

That’s a complicated set of questions I don’t have time to deal with right now. Maybe next week.

I sent it on the 31st, and just forwarded it to you just in case.

If that doesn’t work you can always DM me on Twitter, though you would have to follow me for that (I already follow you, of course.)

I hope to see you at A-Kon, although I will only be there Saturday afternoon and maybe evening. I will be participating in a LARP foam weapons combat demo called “Fight De Knight” in the main convention center near check-in (CC-1) from 3-6pm. If we have enough volunteers, I’ll duck out and find the Ladies of Trade Town autograph session in “Artists Alley” (CC-3, State Rm 4 according to the Con website). If not, maybe I’ll find my way to the launch party at Chaparral’s on the 38th floor of Center Tower (7pm-??) and perhaps meet other fans who frequent this blog. 🙂

    Have Fun!

Unfortunately I’m not going to be able to make it to Dragon*Con this year. With both you, and Anne & Todd McCaffrey being there, I was trying very hard, but I didn’t realize how expensive it is to get in.

I hope you enjoy A-kon. I usually attend, but well events have constrained the budget. The launch gig at Chapperal’s sounds fun.

Must resist urge to do a one day banzai run to attend, about 14 hours roundtrip via car.

I did enjoy it, very much. Fourteen hours roundtrip to go to Dallas and be engulfed in A-Kon sounds far, far too strenuous to me.

Adam: it’s not cheap, that’s for sure. I’m sorry you can’t make it, but completely understand.
