Homeward Bound (almost)

This evening I’m struggling to dry (somehow) a shirt I meant to wash in the hotel room washbasin Saturday but forgot in a drawer…and now it’s a damp pink lump.  So far the hair dryer has made scant inroads on its dampness (yes, yes, it was rolled in towels before ever being hung up.)   I shouldn’t have washed it.  I should have carried it home dirty.  Sigh.   Nobody bugged Paks about putting a dirty shirt in her pack on the way back from a foray.

I had a good time and came up with some additional ideas (and another several-many hundred words of text) while at the convention.   Not being GOH relieved me of some responsibilities, and I felt comfortable diving into my room for a break when I needed one.

Now I’m packing.   I bought books.  How the heck am I going to get them home???   My stuff was plenteous enough already.   Tomorrow morning, I take a taxi (yes, expensive, but easier on me than transferring my luggage through three trains instead of two) to Baltimore International Airport’s Amtrak station, and hop on a train to D.C.    After an hour or two, I’ll be on the train to Chicago, and then after a pause in Chicago’s station and a chance of trains, sometime Thursday evening, back home in Texas.

My own bed.    The ability to pad barefoot to the kitchen and rummage.   The work computer with all the handy stuff I forgot to load onto this one.   Not to mention the husband, son, horses, and land (husband tells me the Texas bluebells–which aren’t bluebells but huge purple-flowered gentians–are in bloom.   There’s a picture of one in this banner from a page on the 80 Acres website, the purple and white flower with the big praying mantis on it.)

At any rate, this is the last post until I’m home again.

But since a tease is always a tease….I now know a lot more about Arcolin’s mysterious past.   I know where he’s from.   I know why he left home.   I know who he is.

And I took the bait. 🙂
Looking forward to know where Jandelir comes from!

By the way, one of the manifold things I love with your books is the way you mingle the names of the characters: Familiar common names like Egil, Jens and Torfinn amidst unfmailiar common names like Saben, Caben, Dorthan and Canna, and then suddenly the exotics; Paksenarrion, Barranyi etc. …

Always stuff an small-to-medium empty duffle bag in your main bag, equipped with straps so it can hang from your main roller suitcase.

I can understand not inflicting on yourself the street theater that is airport security. But most airports and many flights now have Wifi; do trains offer it yet?

I actually had to buy another bag in China, at an exorbitant price, to carry home extra stuff. Didn’t buy all that much until the last day in Shanghai, but people gave me lots of gifts, some of which were heavy and threatened to put my primary suitcase over weight. Books? It’s nice to get the bookstore to ship them home for you if that’s possible. Though if you buy them at a convention, that can be more difficult.

Anyway, hurray for getting home to your own things. I’ll be looking forward to learning more about Jandelir.

That’s why you need squires to carry extra stuff. Still Jim DeWitt is right, bring an extra bag for the squires to carry.

Sorry you got to experience Baltimore during one the most hot, humid and disgusting Memorial Day weekends we’ve had. Were you at Balticon? Wish I’d known, because I’d have tried to stop in for a day.

I kind of like traveling… going somewhere is a little exciting and returning is full of anticipation, too. Thx for sharing the practical side of packing – I love your attention to the processes.

Kristen: Yes, I was at Balticon. Sorry you missed the announcements about the trip ahead of time, here and elsewhere. Would have made a great time even greater to have met up with you. It was a bit iffy if I could make the trip because of husband’s health problems, but that evened out for a few weeks at least and I made it.

Laura: You’re right that both going and coming have their good points. I usually enjoy traveling but am always glad to get home again.

Glad you had a good time – maybe next time. Spring’s a little busy at work, which explains the missed announcements. Best wishes on husband’s health.
