A (Hopefully Brief) Hiatus

Copy edits are on the way…and a family member is in the hospital.   So I will be busy elsewhere, probably for the rest of the week and maybe a bit beyond.   Please be patient, and understand that I’m not goofing off (I WISH!  The answer to “Do writers take vacations?” is a hollow laugh.)

A speedy, complete and inexpensive recovery to your family member. Best wishes with the copy edits. Oh, and I see nothing wrong with you taking a vacation…

This is Arthur. Your comment about vacations reminds me of my father. He has just retired after more than 30 years at his job, and he was reluctant to quit. I told him later that I felt people like him are annoyed by what they see as idleness, and are the sort of person who is active until they die. I love my father very much, and was afraid for him, when he had the accident that caused him to retire. So you rest as much as you can. We have a culture that adores work, but does not honor it, and we love rest and relaxation, but not for the right reasons. I am no better in that regard than anyone, but at least I can recognize it. I think we encorage false stoicism, not true stoicism, and encorage kill-joys.

Jim: you see nothing wrong with my taking a vacation, but Editors probably would. Esp. with copy edits having a “hard” deadline (everything in the Production part of a book’s progress has a hard deadline. I hope the CEs arrive tomorrow, not wet. One year they arrived soaked through.)

Arthur: I agree that our cultural approach to both work and recreation is imperfect, but also life can throw not just curve balls but cannonballs at you from time to time.

The reader in me is selfishly stomping its foot and complaining at any risk of delay in the next dozen books or so. The human being (that also enjoys reading the 80 Acres Blog and your lj) recognizes that a fellow human being cannot spend every minute writing. I wish for a quick recovery for your family member, not because it will reduce the risk for delay of the next books, but because you and your family have become part of those I care for – even if it is only “e-care” over the Internet.

As a more tangible offer of support, I will increase my efforts in convincing everyone around me that they need their own copies of all your books. 🙂
