At the Finish

Crown of Renewal, by a nose, despite all the obstacles in its path as reported in breathless gasps by Crown’s disheveled jockey:

“We made it.  I don’t know how, but Crown is a remarkable horse, a great horse, and all the way down the stretch he was on the bit and driving hard.   Never stopped.   All that earlier trouble was interference.   Toxicity made the last serious challenge, but I grabbed Crown‘s mane and hung on.  What a ride!    Crown was pouring it on, all the way. ”

In the tradition of the Great Book Handicap,  Crown will be given a fast going over with brush and tail-comb before appearing in the winner’s circle ( known by insiders at this track as “The Editor’s Inbox”.)

(Going to wander off and have ice cream now, before final spell-check/chapter heading check, all that nitpicky stuff.)

Many congratulations, Elizabeth. Now for a soothing mash and a warm rug? 🙂

I am so looking forward to reading this.

Huzzah! Ice cream and/or some good dark chocolate are in order for the victorious jockey.

Have you decided what your next project will be? After all, you will have a little free time before Editor gets back to you…

    Congratulations! To Crown!

The ice cream is well-deserved, and I am sure that you will share with that starving POV character who had such a rough ocean voyage.

Meanwhile, we look forward to hearing from you when you are more relaxed.

Kerry: (hysterical laughter mixed with sobs) Free time? You think I have free time now? When I have let other work languish while on crunch with Crown? (whimper) Three promotional blog posts, two of them for publishers, backed up emails, contracted stories for anthologies I need to write quickly, finishing the master map for Paksworld and getting the right part of it to publisher so Crown will have the right map, back on the fitness program I dropped to finish Crown (having to catch back up to where I was), work on the land (as husband is still hobbling with crutch his ACL gave way), more FamilyStuff that’s marked Urgent, a convention next weekend I’m attending, sock knitting, prep for Mozart concert (two big rehearsals for which I’m missing because of the convention), prep for Rutgers University speech (not until Sept. but if I don’t work on it now….), digging out study (and house) so I can find things that have gone missing in past year…free time is an illusion, at least for me.

And at the end of every big project I need time to reset all the switches and let the well refill from the frantic pumping of the previous weeks/months. When it does, and I have a clue, I will share it.

Prayers are constantly ascending, and not for entirely selfish reasons.

No matter how much I hunger for the finale of this series, I hunger even more for anything you want to write — have I ever said how deeply books like “The Speed of Dark” and “Remnant Population” (especially because of how Ofelia reminds me of my own beloved grandmother simply because she is an independent, extraordinary woman) have changed my life?

IOW, I’m not only glad that Crown has crossed the finish line, but I also harbor a deep hope that it’s author will not only have the rest she deserves but also that there are many more tales fomenting in her more-that-fertile imagination!

{Hugs} There, there, don’t cry. What I said obviously didn’t come out quite the way I intended it. I know you always have other things to do and keep busy, but you manage to do them while writing unless it’s crunch time. Yes, definitely recharge and get back on the bike and I will see you the end of August.

Perhaps now that Crown has crossed the finish line, some of the false starts and deleted story lines will consolidate into short stories.

Or perhaps some long buried characters will emerge from an entirely different universe. At any rate, the knitting should help the consolidation (busy hands with time to think). I find Mozart nourishing to the soul. (Mild envy for the rehearsals)

I would say take a well-deserved rest, but it sounds like you will have little time for that. I’ve always been amazed at how much you manage to cram into your life and keep up with, more or less gracefully, and still produce these gems of books for us. Congratulations on “finishing,” even though I know there are always still a few more details… Looking forward to seeing this horse (of a different color?).

What splendid news for all of us!

Just finished yet another re-read, and with Dorrin standing alert, Arvid befuddled, and Stammel hanging out with Dragon I appreciate knowing that the questions will be answered, even if it will take two books to get there.

Given the jockey and the stable the smart money was always on Crown, but still a most exciting race. Well done.

Two other horses I recall being in the field, obviously well beaten if they finished at all: Scorpion Sting (who showed way too early) and Wasps Nest.

Wha-hey! Congratulations! Do you take the long weekend off before starting to nit-pick, so you come a bit fresher? I don’t mean necessarily “off”, you understand, but doing Other Important Things and leaving Crown of Renewal severely alone?

    Congratulations!

Just finished my reread of Echoes, can’t wait to have Limits in my hands in two weeks time!

In case I didn’t mention it before, the scene with both Arvids at the end I found very, very moving.
Has perhaps to do that I became a father recently, but still, had to fight back some tears.
