OK, I’m back. Awake, aware, capable of independent movement and thought. The thoughts are whirling a bit right now (happy at being out of their cage, I expect.) Now…where were we? Oh, yes. Post trip report on book, etc.
Book V may have a title, but I’m not ready to tell you what it might be yet. Editor liked my suggestions–very similar but for one word. Nonetheless it has to pass through the filters of the other relevant departments to become the actual title.
I had a delightful time with Editor and others in the publishing house offices. I’m listening to one of the operas I went to (Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore) and the opening scene of conviviality was much like my visits with the Del Rey people. I even, on the last day, was persuaded to try grilled octopus…and liked it. Also had some substantive talks with my agent, and useful visits with other writers and editors at various meals. I very much enjoyed seeing Former Editors I and IV (of six and I hope I’m counting right) again and having supper with them and with Former Publicist. Former Editor I is the one who had both the original Paks books (but not the prequels) and the new Paks up as far as you’ve read. Former Editor IV was my editor for The Speed of Dark and the first several (two or three; can’t quite remember) Vatta’s War books. I think I’ve mentioned being blessed with a number of really good editors.
Agent has moved into new office space since I was there last; I had met two of the assistant agents before but only briefly, and had not met the third. I was late getting there due to (I claim) bad signage in the Times Square subway station that meant I sat waiting on the platform for a train that never came until I caught on. When I finally found the platform for the 7 train (after asking directions) it was still a long ride and a confusing climb down from the elevated platform. Nice office, though. We all went out to lunch.
So the New York trip was productive, but exhausting…there just wasn’t much down time in it. Wouldn’t have missed any of it, though, except the bug that laid me low on return.

Very glad to know that you have recovered from your excursion to New York and are on song again (pun intended). I spent 24 hours overnight in New York in 1974 waiting for a London flight connection with $5 on me and no cards. Not a problem then, but I wouldn’t want to repeat the experience now. Still waiting breathlessly for 2013 and Limits – forced to read the Vatta saga again this week. Take care.

I am glad to hear that you are feeling better, and that you had a good, if hectic, trip to New York.
I have to say that I have never found Manhattan to be anything but hectic. There is always too much going on.
Good news that you may have a title for Book V. Somehow, it seems much closer to “book-I-can-read” and further from “projected-book-in-series” if it has a title. Even if I don’t know what the title actually is.
Thanks for the update on the editors. Somehow, I know that they are there, and important, but they are like shadows. I can never actually imagine them. Your stories help me see them as actual people.

Glad to hear you’ve recovered! About 6 weeks ago I caught a pretty nasty bug that set me on my backside for a few days. And then I managed to give it to everyone else in the family, even w/ fairly extreme measures to try preventing it.
Glad to hear that NYC trip was fun & productive. Its always nice to sit down w/ old colleagues.

Glad you are home from New York City safe and sound. Glad you had some good visits with editors, etc.

@ Ginny : I agree with your assessment of Manhattan, only was twice there but everytime I had the impression everyone was on overdrive, kinda like the duracell rabitt.

On this most special of holidays (to me) I must ask. Is it expected to set aside a portion of one’s candy to the Writer, er, I mean the grange?

No, the harvester of the candied fields of Halloween is entitled to the full harvest, subject only to his/her own other obligations.
Paksworld doesn’t celebrate Halloween (I know, it was a big mistake, but it’s embedded in the culture now that they don’t.) Therefore there’s no Paksworld tax on Halloween candy.

Iphinome: Thank you for the Halloween wishes. It was a good time, with candy for all and many small, but scary monsters at the door.
Elizabeth: I think I detected a Halloween flavor to the visit Kieri made to the bones of his ancestors on Midwinter night, but perhaps I am wrong.
I hope that your editors and publishers are surviving the not-a-hurricane here on the East Coast. We have had only minimal effects in Philadelphia, but they were hit much harder in New York City.
