You very patient people deserve another snippet from Kings of the North<\/em>, as a Happy New Year present…or Bye-bye 2010 present.\u00a0\u00a0 Oh, what the heck.\u00a0 Two presents, one for each year.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I’ll be keying this in from my reference ARC, so do not assume that any typos here are actually in the book (I sure hope not…)<\/p>\n

Where:\u00a0 V\u00e9rella, the palace<\/p>\n

Who:\u00a0 Selis, Duke Marrakai and Dorrin, Duke Verrakai<\/p>\n

Duke Marrakai stopped Dorrin on her way out of the palace that same day.\u00a0 He looked perfectly healthy now, as if he’d never had an injury.\u00a0 “I’m wondering if you’ve considered taking squires,” he said.\u00a0 “I know other peers are planning to propose their sons to you, but I exercised a little persuasion to I could be the first to ask.\u00a0 I have a situation, you see.”<\/p>\n

“A situation?”<\/p>\n

“Well, perhaps you noticed that although there are girls in training to become Knights of the Bells, you never see them as anyone’s squire.\u00a0 There’s a feeling that girls of that age should be home with their families.\u00a0 They can train with the local grange, or even here for knighthood, but they’re just not chosen as squires.\u00a0 They need a woman’s guidance, is one thing people say.\u00a0 The girls don’t much like it, but there you are.\u00a0 Now, you’ve commanded women in battle; you know all the things that young women get into, I daresay.\u00a0 And I have a daughter–”<\/p>\n

The daughter is Gwennothlin, and she fits the family character (“…all one brew, and that a heady one…”)<\/p>\n

Who:\u00a0 The Marshal-General of Gird and Arvid Semminson<\/p>\n

The horse dealer protested.\u00a0 “It can’t be stolen.\u00a0 The Marshal told me–a Marshal from up there–”\u00a0\u00a0 The man pointed his thumb up the hill.\u00a0 “He said it was his, and he wanted something quieter, not so flashy.”<\/p>\n

“Did he say why he bought it in the first place?”<\/p>\n

“No…t’horse was jerking on the lead.\u00a0 I thought maybe he was heavy-handed.”\u00a0 The horse dealer watched Arvid scrubbing at the white on the near fore.\u00a0\u00a0 “I swear, Marshal-General, I didn’t know…he was a Marshal;\u00a0 I never even thought about it–”<\/p>\n

“There we go.” Arvid spoke up.\u00a0 Patchy black showed through the white now.\u00a0 “See that?”<\/p>\n

“Yes.”\u00a0 The horse-dealer grimaced.\u00a0 “And I paid…”\u00a0 His voice faltered as Arvid looked at him.\u00a0 “Two gold crescents.”<\/p>\n
