I now have ARCs for Kings of the North<\/em> in my hot little hands (the weather turned warm and muggy–hands are definitely hot.)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 There will be a contest in which someone will win an ARC.\u00a0\u00a0 However, due to multiple instances of LifeStuff, I don’t have the contest idea worked out yet, so the contest isn’t today or maybe even this week.\u00a0\u00a0 It will happen, however, because I now have a prize some of you will probably want.<\/p>\n

The ARCs are tastefully decorated in purple and white: Del Rey logos on a white background.\u00a0\u00a0 The map pages contain the helpful note at the top “Map” but do not actually have the map.\u00a0 In other words, typical ARCs.<\/p>\n

But they have the story in them.\u00a0 That<\/em> story.\u00a0 The story in which what was round and shiny and red turned pear-shaped and falls onto the the storyteller’s head.\u00a0 The story in which difficult princesses and angry fathers and brash youths and lovers with excessively high principles and interfering relatives and ambitious traitors and evil monsters and bones with long memories and mythical creatures and diplomatic disasters…all sort themselves along a descending path from the apple on the branch to the smushed pear on the writer’s head.\u00a0\u00a0 Among other things.<\/p>\n

One ARC\u00a0 is already earmarked for you folks.\u00a0\u00a0 It will be signed (of course) to the winner, and I’m going to pattern it after the contests Robin McKinley runs on her blogsite, even though my site doesn’t have some of special features…but it’ll be easy and I hope fun, when my brain has actually had enough sleep to think up something.<\/p>\n

Feel free to make suggestions for fun ideas for the contest, if you want.\u00a0\u00a0 There will be a drawing from among qualified entries, because there’s no way I’m going to be picking “the best recipe\/character name\/favorite character\/funniest this or weirdest that.”\u00a0 I’m chicken.\u00a0 It’s the qualifying part that could be fun.\u00a0\u00a0 For one of hers, McKinley asked people to say what they’d bake if they won a copy of the book, for instance.<\/p>\n
