From Kings of the North<\/em>…<\/p>\n

Location: Chaya, the Royal Ossuary.\u00a0\u00a0 POV: King Kieri Phelan<\/p>\n

Situation:\u00a0 Kieri’s become aware of something mysterious and troubling interfering with his attempt to bring elves and humans closer together.\u00a0 He has visited the ossuary before,\u00a0 and had some disturbing hints.\u00a0\u00a0 Now he’s there again…<\/p>\n

This time he lit no candle, just sat and listened…to nothing, for a long time.<\/p>\n

Then once again he felt presences gathering around him.\u00a0 One conveyed
\nthe combination of wistfulness and stubborn anger that he now associated with his sister.<\/p>\n

I’m here<\/em>, he thought.<\/p>\n

Once again: Betrayal.\u00a0 Danger. <\/em><\/p>\n

He sat quietly, trying to open his mind as he did to the taig.<\/p>\n

They lie. <\/em><\/p>\n

She had conveyed that before, but who lied?<\/p>\n

She trusted. <\/em><\/p>\n

Who trusted?<\/p>\n

A fuzzy image of a face leaning down, a sense of warmth and safety.\u00a0 Kieri finally realized this was an adult’s face as a very small child might see it…a face he almost knew…did know, as he noticed the elven bone structure, subtly different from human.<\/p>\n

Our mother trusted?\u00a0 Trusted whom?<\/em><\/p>\n

There’s a lot of tangled Stuff going on, and I’m only partway through untangling it myself….the chains of causation go all the way back and the characters yammering in my head to tell me their side of it aren’t all reliable witnesses.\u00a0 Even the ones trying to be.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
