{"id":786,"date":"2010-05-26T10:17:52","date_gmt":"2010-05-26T16:17:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.paksworld.com\/blog\/?p=786"},"modified":"2010-05-26T10:17:52","modified_gmt":"2010-05-26T16:17:52","slug":"mapping-paksworld","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.paksworld.com\/blog\/?p=786","title":{"rendered":"Mapping Paksworld"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We moved the old drafting table over from the other house (had been my mother&#8217;s after she moved up here,\u00a0 then guest-house, then son&#8217;s house for a couple of years) to what is now the spare bedroom in this house.\u00a0 Only it&#8217;s not going to be a spare bedroom&#8211;it&#8217;s going to be a drawing\/painting\/graphics room.\u00a0 The old drafting table, now well over 60 years old, is pretty beat-up, so I&#8217;m using a piece of plexiglass on top of the (rapidly delaminating) original maple veneer top.\u00a0 The tilt mechanism doesn&#8217;t work anymore&#8211;my mother stabilized it with a pair of extra &#8220;legs&#8221; that fixed it at one tilt.\u00a0\u00a0 (Yes, I could maybe get a newer used one, or a new one, but this is the drafting table I remember from early childhood.\u00a0\u00a0 A &#8220;don&#8217;t touch&#8221; zone that I violated only a few times&#8230;most notably the time I used my mother&#8217;s big T-square as a hobby-horse.\u00a0 Once.\u00a0 The repercussions were convincing.)<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The new master map, begun for <em>Oath of Fealty<\/em>, is now taped down to the new surface, with an undersheet and a cover sheet.\u00a0 This may be temporary&#8211;it&#8217;s been rolled and stored in a map tube for safety for the past year, so it&#8217;s got &#8220;waves.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I taped it down right-side-up, but if 24 hours under a weighted cover doesn&#8217;t flatten it, I&#8217;ll tape it face-down under pressure as well before starting work.<\/p>\n<p>More of it is done than showed in <em>Oath<\/em>, but not all that&#8217;s drawn has been inked.\u00a0 Inking is the tricky bit, as&#8211;both from the way I was taught and for Production&#8211;it has to be inked in the blackest, most permanent ink there is, and then scanned (or photographed, which is how I did the Oath map) in pure black\/white.<\/p>\n<p>Pargun is still pretty much blank.\u00a0\u00a0 Everything that happened there in both the original <em>Deed<\/em> and <em>Oath<\/em> happened offstage.\u00a0 So I have to figure out where Rostvok (the capital) is, and the settlements (and one actual port) on the river.\u00a0\u00a0 The usual way I find out about &#8220;small terrain&#8221;\u00a0 is to be in the head of a POV character who&#8217;s there.\u00a0 In this instance&#8230;I haven&#8217;t been there yet.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a nuisance.\u00a0\u00a0 C.J.
