{"id":737,"date":"2010-04-02T21:47:50","date_gmt":"2010-04-03T03:47:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.paksworld.com\/blog\/?p=737"},"modified":"2010-04-02T21:47:50","modified_gmt":"2010-04-03T03:47:50","slug":"oath-in-southern-england","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.paksworld.com\/blog\/?p=737","title":{"rendered":"Oath in Southern England"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8216;From the south of England, after a very hard winter, OATH contemplates the Fig, Olive, and Lemon trees in the greenhouse and thinks it will soon be warm enough for them outside,&#8217; wrote Amanda Lee-Riley.\u00a0\u00a0 I cropped this, so I hope all three kinds of leaves are still showing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.paksworld.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Oath-in-S-England1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-738\" title=\"Oath-in-S-England\" src=\"http:\/\/www.paksworld.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Oath-in-S-England1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"236\" \/><\/a><em>Photo courtesy of Amanda Lee-Riley<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><!--more-->I&#8217;m amazed that people can grow olives and lemons and figs in England&#8230;though I remember reading that in some areas the climate is amazingly mild.\u00a0\u00a0 We have a fig tree (and it survived the night of 10 F this winter!) but not olive or lemon&#8230;I&#8217;d really like to have a lemon tree again.\u00a0 Where I grew up, in South Texas, there were groves of citrus and we had a Meyers lemon tree and a Valencia orange tree\u00a0 in the yard.\u00a0\u00a0 I could come home from school, pick a lemon, and make lemonade&#8230;and when the groves bloomed&#8230;it was incredible.\u00a0\u00a0 My grandfather could graft trees, and had created a multi-citrus tree for his yard&#8211;two or three kinds of grapefruit, two kinds of oranges, lemons, limes, tangerines, etc.\u00a0\u00a0 I never saw it; my mother told me about it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Orange-blossom honey&#8230;although I also love guajillo honey (native brushland shrub) which is completely different.\u00a0\u00a0 Clover honey is OK, but orange-blossom and guajillo honeys both have a spicy undertone.\u00a0\u00a0 Valencia oranges are almost too sweet;\u00a0 I remember sitting on the roof of the arbor and having bees perch on my hand to suck the sweet orange juice (I was terrified but had sense enough to hold still.\u00a0 They didn&#8217;t sting me.\u00a0 However, I didn&#8217;t try eating an orange on the roof again.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8216;From the south of England, after a very hard winter, OATH contemplates the Fig, Olive, and Lemon trees in the greenhouse and thinks it will soon be warm enough for them outside,&#8217; wrote Amanda Lee-Riley.\u00a0\u00a0 I cropped this, so I hope all three kinds of leaves are still showing.
