{"id":704,"date":"2010-03-27T08:58:04","date_gmt":"2010-03-27T14:58:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.paksworld.com\/blog\/?p=704"},"modified":"2010-03-27T09:42:36","modified_gmt":"2010-03-27T15:42:36","slug":"another-continent-heard-from","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.paksworld.com\/blog\/?p=704","title":{"rendered":"Another Continent Heard From&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Oath<\/em> gazes with interest at the Perth city skyline in Western Australia, no doubt unaware that this image gives its writer a touch of nostalgia&#8230;been there twice, loved it both times.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.paksworld.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/Oath-in-Perth-WA.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-705\" title=\"Oath-in-Perth-WA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.paksworld.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/Oath-in-Perth-WA-253x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"253\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.paksworld.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/Oath-in-Perth-WA-253x300.jpg 253w, http:\/\/www.paksworld.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/Oath-in-Perth-WA.jpg 338w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 253px) 100vw, 253px\" \/><\/a><em>Photo courtesy of Marian Foster <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em><!--more--><\/em>Back in 1999, on our first trip to the southern hemisphere, we took several weeks, after the Melbourne Worldcon, to wander around Australia &amp; New Zealand.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It was a wonderful, amazing, trip, and Perth was part of that wonder and amazement, even though I made the mistake of eating a meat pie at the fair (I&#8217;m a sucker for county and state fairs) that had been sitting too long on the counter, and the next few days were seriously unpleasant.\u00a0 Not Perth&#8217;s fault&#8211;mine.\u00a0 Perth wasn&#8217;t the only place I fell for (list places we went&#8211;yup, that&#8217;s right.)\u00a0 (However, Perth IS the only place where I&#8217;ve heard a pipe and drum band attempt calypso music with the aid of an electronic synthesizer for the steel drums&#8230;speaking as someone who really does love the pipes, I have a word of advice&#8230;don&#8217;t buy the CD of this one unless you like musical horror.\u00a0 Some matches are not made in heaven.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Then I went back to Australia (and Perth) for SwanCon a few years ago, and met even more interesting\/delightful\/amazing people and saw even more lovely bits of the countryside.\u00a0\u00a0 So there are many good memories attached to Perth, from the best spring rolls I ever had in my life (restaurant a few blocks from the hotel) to a martial arts exhibition that was not only brilliantly impressive, but also funny (wow!) to&#8230;oh, name it, it was good.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I&#8217;m sure that<em> Oath<\/em> is having just as good an experience, and will never forget the place or the people.\u00a0\u00a0 Thanks, Marian, for sharing Oath&#8217;s adventures with me.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Oath gazes with interest at the Perth city skyline in Western Australia, no doubt unaware that this image gives its writer a touch of nostalgia&#8230;been there twice, loved it both times.
