A Halveric sergeant and a couple of tensquads meet the unsurvivable and survive.\u00a0 Well, sixteen of them survive.\u00a0 For awhile, anyway.\u00a0\u00a0 My view of Halverics has always been from the Phelan side…and I thought they were more alike than they are.\u00a0 (More spoiler warning!)<\/p>\n
The Halverics and the forest rangers have the same basic goal, but they have different backgrounds and experience.<\/p>\n
The rangers operate alone or in small groups, dealing with what comes up.\u00a0 They’re intensely aware of the taig, and use both the taig proper and the signals given by animals and plants to determine what’s going on.\u00a0 They have no tradition of formation fighting, but are deadly snipers.\u00a0\u00a0 They don’t wear much armor, as they’re usually in cover, unseen, and need to move quickly and quietly.<\/p>\n
Halverics are veterans of the Aarenisian wars, used to fighting in large formations, often alongside other mercenary companies; they are all trained to use bows, but their primary weapon is the short sword.\u00a0\u00a0 As archers,\u00a0 they were trained to shoot by volleys, and few are good enough to be effective snipers.\u00a0 They wear protection, including helmets.\u00a0\u00a0 Although they can all ride, and have functioned as mounted infantry on occasion, they’re mostly pure foot.\u00a0 If the contract calls for cavalry, either the employer or Aliam will hire a cavalry unit separately.<\/p>\n
Although the rangers and Halverics want to cooperate, they’re still fumbling around a bit, figuring out who can do what best.<\/p>\n
