{"id":36,"date":"2008-12-14T23:07:20","date_gmt":"2008-12-15T05:07:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.paksworld.com\/blog\/?p=36"},"modified":"2008-12-14T23:07:20","modified_gmt":"2008-12-15T05:07:20","slug":"musicin-and-out-of-pakss-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.paksworld.com\/blog\/?p=36","title":{"rendered":"Music&#8230;in and out of Paks&#8217;s world"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the constants across cultures is music:\u00a0 people make music.\u00a0\u00a0 They play with rhythm and pitch and loudness&#8211;they sing individually and in chorus&#8211;they move to the music they make, and make it dance.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been hooked on music since early childhood.\u00a0 I write to music&#8211;characters have theme music, entire books have music attached them\u00a0 as I write them.\u00a0\u00a0 (Gird: Brahms&#8217; GERMAN REQUIEM.\u00a0 Luap: Zamfir&#8217;s best-known work for panpipes and orchestra.\u00a0\u00a0 Listen to both.\u00a0 Tells you everything about the difference in their character.\u00a0 Or it does to me.)<\/p>\n<p>This past week, I&#8217;ve sung a good chunk of Handel&#8217;s MESSIAH with my church choir &amp; friends, and the Austin Symphony.\u00a0 My husband sang Vivaldi&#8217;s GLORIA tonight with his church choir &amp; friends, and a small chamber orchestra.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The GLORIA is definitely a work that belongs in Paksenarrion&#8217;s world&#8230;but no one there speaks (or ever spoke) Latin, nor is the theology\u00a0 correct there.\u00a0 But the music&#8230;oh, yes.\u00a0\u00a0  Some of MESSIAH could also cross over, but not all of it.<\/p>\n<p>So far, only classical music (in the broad sense) works for me when writing fantasy.\u00a0\u00a0 Everything else is too connected to this everyday world&#8230;the music I write to (at least when writing fantasy, and often otherwise) has to lift me out of the mundane.\u00a0\u00a0 For me this means harmony (dissonance only to resolve it), intricacy, and really gorgeous shadings.\u00a0 Vivaldi&#8217;s GLORIA has all that.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the constants across cultures is music:\u00a0 people make music.\u00a0\u00a0 They play with rhythm and pitch and loudness&#8211;they sing individually and in chorus&#8211;they move to the music they make, and make it dance.
