So INTO THE FIRE reached its appointed end yesterday–today has been filled with other chores–and now I’m going to comb the burs out of its mane, curry the mud-clumps off its back and belly where it rolled and wallowed, and present it to Editor with (I hope) nothing much for her to do but work her magic with the clippers to make it still prettier.<\/p>\n

I got a full-length nap this afternoon,\u00a0 after an interesting morning that involved going to pick up the other car from where it had been towed and worked on, then going by one of the shopping centers in Georgetown to get some stuff at Target, then drifting off thinking about what the book might need in the way of revision and taking a wrong turn that led me back to this town by as roundabout a method as you could find, given the terrain and available roads.\u00a0\u00a0 Got back into our town just in time to see husband coming out of the car wash with the car we’d retrieved (a venerable minivan), a coincidence it would’ve been hard to coordinate without much use of clocks and cellphones…and both of us had forgotten to take our cellphones along.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 He’d gone to the big supermarket in Georgetown.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 If I’d taken any other route…we could not have ended up in tandem driving from the car wash to home.<\/p>\n
The place that came and towed the car from here used to be in Georgetown, easy to find on a convenient road, but they had moved, so we didn’t find it on the first try…the road it’s on is a short old county road, narrow and badly paved, and the repair place is what the road dead-ends into.\u00a0\u00a0 It belongs in a movie in which Bad Things Happen at the end of the narrow little country road…it now looks like a cross between a junkyard, a derelict farm, and the hideout of people you never want to be around after dark and maybe not by day.\u00a0\u00a0 Neither of us was comfortable there.\u00a0\u00a0 We will be looking for another towing company\/car repair place.<\/p>\n
Editor sent me a rough of the cover for INTO THE FIRE (can’t share it) so the business side is still moving along.\u00a0\u00a0 COLD WELCOME will be a Science Fiction Book Club selection (yay!)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I look forward to getting back to the next Paksworld short fiction collection–I had intended to get it done last year, but the physical problems intervened.\u00a0\u00a0 Without a next book on deadline to write, that won’t be a problem even with the various medical interventions that may show up.<\/p>\n
