{"id":2543,"date":"2015-11-15T10:37:22","date_gmt":"2015-11-15T16:37:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.paksworld.com\/blog\/?p=2543"},"modified":"2015-11-15T10:37:22","modified_gmt":"2015-11-15T16:37:22","slug":"closing-in","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.paksworld.com\/blog\/?p=2543","title":{"rendered":"Closing In"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At this stage of revision, I always wish I had another two weeks.\u00a0 Or a month.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 There&#8217;s always one&#8230;more&#8230;problem bit to untangle, that I think would benefit from more time to analyze and think about.\u00a0 And then another, in the next section.\u00a0 However, things are progressing appropriately.\u00a0 The holes are filling in,\u00a0 the once-blurry places are sharpening into focus, and though I&#8217;m dealing with some decisions made earlier that I might make differently now, they&#8217;re working out with some fierce hammering and welding.\u00a0\u00a0 (Clever ideas.\u00a0 Clever ideas are the ones that seem so shiny! and smart!\u00a0 at the time, and that flow easily in first draft and then&#8230;toward the end&#8230;reveal themselves to be more clever than good.\u00a0 For instance, the&#8230;mumble-mumph.\u00a0 How do you mumble-mumble and mumph-mumph so as to have a crisis *here* that requires characters to appear to have a random emergency giving you-the-writer the opportunity to lay the hook for the string that will later be pulled, so when something (errummph?) is revealed, the reader will feel a connection&#8211;yes, there was a foreshadowing but things were so hectic I missed it&#8211;and thus the revelation is not a <em>deus ex machin<\/em>a.\u00a0\u00a0 Though of course all this backstage work IS the writer being the <em>deus ex machina.<\/em>)\u00a0\u00a0 <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In some situations, this is easy, because the situation offers a multitude of possibilities, the writer is familiar with them in the story-setting, and readers will find at least 60% of them familiar enough to pass without concern.\u00a0 Life is complicated;
