{"id":2275,"date":"2014-07-02T00:12:54","date_gmt":"2014-07-02T06:12:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.paksworld.com\/blog\/?p=2275"},"modified":"2014-07-02T00:12:54","modified_gmt":"2014-07-02T06:12:54","slug":"a-sort-of-warning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.paksworld.com\/blog\/?p=2275","title":{"rendered":"A Sort of Warning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Because I&#8217;ve seen comments on other venues about some writer&#8217;s fans going after a reviewer who didn&#8217;t like their favorite writer&#8217;s books&#8230;please, should you find a negative review or comment on mine, <em>don&#8217;t be those fans<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0 There will always be reviewers who don&#8217;t like a given book&#8230;there are reviewers and book bloggers who don&#8217;t like mine&#8230;but let them dislike it in peace.\u00a0\u00a0 If it&#8217;s a venue where a lot of reviews are posted, and you feel like posting a more favorable one, go ahead, but I don&#8217;t want to be the occasion of an attack on a reviewer\/book blogger, whatever. Such storms nearly always end up leaving muck all over the writer, who may not have wanted the row in the first place.\u00a0\u00a0 We have a pleasant bunch here, and I don&#8217;t think it&#8217;s likely any of you would start a row, but just in case you&#8217;re tempted.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>A writer whom I find amusing to read (blogs and Twitter, though I&#8230;um&#8230;haven&#8217;t read her books yet) commented today that people were kicking up a row on GoodReads because of a misreading by one person that&#8217;s been taken up by others, and she&#8217;s getting furious emails about having ripped off something for her book&#8230;which was written before the real-life events\u00a0 she&#8217;s accused of ripping off, and besides&#8230;they misread the book, so the parallel isn&#8217;t there anyway.\u00a0\u00a0 Typical internet row, feeding off itself rather than fact-checking.\u00a0 Should you ever be tempted to think someone ripped off someone else, do check the copyright dates.\u00a0 (One of the funnier&#8211;but annoying&#8211;ones I ran across was someone claiming that Tolkein&#8217;s <em>LOTR<\/em> ripped off Terry Brooks&#8217; <em>Shannara<\/em> books.)\u00a0\u00a0 You may remember the row when the first <em>Hunger Games<\/em> movie came out because an important character was a person of color (with careless teen readers claiming she was added for political correctness) when in fact the character in the book is clearly a person of color.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway.\u00a0 Should you come across a\u00a0 review you think is wrongheaded, the best thing to do, IMO, is to let it alone, and write your own if it&#8217;s a review venue.\u00a0 No attacks, no protracted arguments.\u00a0 That applies to anyone&#8217;s book, not just mine.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 People have a right to dislike any book, even if&#8211;to you, me, and the gatepost&#8211;it seems their dislike is wrongheaded.\u00a0\u00a0 Maybe I stepped on their toe in fifth grade and they never forgave me.\u00a0\u00a0 Maybe we&#8217;ve clashed somewhere about politics (since I&#8217;m not shy about saying what I think in several venues.)\u00a0\u00a0 Or maybe, to them, the book is pretty much like a pile of reeking\u00a0 rotten fish.\u00a0 I get stuff in email, or run across it here and there, that&#8217;s very negative, but&#8230;that&#8217;s the way the world is.\u00a0\u00a0 It hasn&#8217;t yet stopped me writing fiction (and won&#8217;t.)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Because I&#8217;ve seen comments on other venues about some writer&#8217;s fans going after a reviewer who didn&#8217;t like their favorite writer&#8217;s books&#8230;please, should you find a negative review or comment on mine, don&#8217;t be those fans.\u00a0\u00a0 There will always be reviewers who don&#8217;t like a given book&#8230;there are reviewers and book bloggers who don&#8217;t like [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[53],"tags":[112],"class_list":["post-2275","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-life-beyond-writing","tag-life-beyond-writing"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.paksworld.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2275"}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.paksworld.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.paksworld.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.paksworld.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.paksworld.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=2275"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"http:\/\/www.paksworld.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2275\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":2276,"href":"http:\/\/www.paksworld.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2275\/revisions\/2276"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.paksworld.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=2275"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.paksworld.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=2275"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.paksworld.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=2275"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
