Because it’s the week of my birthday, you get a snippet.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 One with some judicious excisions, alas, because\u00a0 Crown<\/em> is so very full of spoilers this close to the end of the whole story arc.\u00a0\u00a0 It’s still supposed to raise more questions than it answers.

Where: Verella, Marrakai House<\/p>\n

Who: Dorrin and Duke Marrakai<\/p>\n

Gwenno Marrakai wants to go to the Bells for knight’s training.\u00a0\u00a0 Dorrin has agreed that she’s ready.\u00a0 Now the question is, will her father agree?\u00a0 But it’s not the only question.<\/p>\n

Dorrin explained again.\u00a0 Marrakai nodded.<\/p>\n

“I understand.\u00a0 If you’re sure she’s ready for the Bells, I’ll talk to the right people–though she would be the only girl, at present.”<\/p>\n

“What about the Company of Gird, in Fin Panir?\u00a0 Aris was there, wasn’t he?”<\/p>\n

“In the junior school, yes.\u00a0 But I’m not sending any of my family to Fintha.\u00a0 Too dangerous.\u00a0 I don’t suppose you’ve seen any mage hunters over where you are.”<\/p>\n

“No, none.\u00a0\u00a0 But surely not in Fin Panir itself.\u00a0 The Marshal-General spoke out against it, didn’t she?”<\/p>\n

“She did.\u00a0 She’s been physically attacked.\u00a0 Riots in the city.\u00a0 Children taken, tested for magery, and the ones that the mage hunters believed are mages killed.”\u00a0 He shook his head.\u00a0 “No, no daughter of mine is going to Fintha.\u00a0 It’s the Bells or nothing.\u00a0 She won’t like it if they refuse, but I can send her down to the country where she can ride horses and play at being a soldier without causing talk.”<\/p>\n

Dorrin opened her mouth to say that Gwenno was far beyond “playing” at being a soldier, but…it was not her concern anymore.\u00a0 This was between Gwenno and her parents.<\/p>\n
