warning.\u00a0\u00a0 If anyone thinks of something spoilerish that they&#8217;re pretty sure is right&#8230;please don&#8217;t post it in comments to this post.\u00a0 As soon as I finish this one, I&#8217;m going to open a Speculation Space for such discussions, and all you who don&#8217;t like spoilers should stay out of it.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Is that OK?\u00a0\u00a0 (If not, I&#8217;ll fix it later.)<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Snippet:\u00a0 First paragraph and a half\u00a0 of <em>Crown<\/em> (you&#8217;ve already seen the first sentence.)<\/p>\n<p>POV: Meddthal Andressat<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Andressat, winter of the previous year<\/p>\n<p>Winter storms, one after another, cut off the high plateau of Andressat from the lowlands around it as Midwinter Feast neared.\u00a0 On the morning before the night-long vigil, Meddthal Andressat, the Count of Andressat&#8217;s second son and present commander in the north, woke to hear the thud of the inner door closing, then voices in the tower&#8217;s main hall: exclamations, then quieter tones.<\/p>\n<p>Someone, he gathered, had sent something to someone as a gift.\u00a0 Found it by the door.\u00a0 Sighing, he pushed back the covers, dressed quickly, and went out to see what was going on&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>This was the beginning I tried not to use, which turned out to be essential in ways I had not anticipated, but which created the first &#8220;kink&#8221;
