Right now other people are working hard on Crown of Renewal<\/em>‘s production status–the copy editor, for one–but there’s no news for me to share until after I get the copy edits and return them.<\/p>\n

I am trying to catch up on everything that went astray earlier this year (HA! Fat chance!) and prepare for the next trip, next week.\u00a0 It feels like being stuck windless with sagging sails in the Sargasso Sea, because it seems like no matter how many things I accomplish on a given day, more appear…and I’m not making progress on a book, which is one of the few things that gives me a sense of progress.\u00a0 Most of the things I’m doing will need doing again and again and again.\u00a0 Fill out this form, mail it in.\u00a0 Fill out another form, mail it in.\u00a0 Write this check, mail it in.\u00a0 Write another check, mail it in.\u00a0 Pay this or that or the other bill online.\u00a0 Wash the dishes, do the laundry, swab out the toilet.\u00a0 Call for an appointment. \u00a0 Answer this phone message.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 There’s always more of this kind of thing to do.\u00a0 Dishes, stoves, floors, and socks always get dirty again.\u00a0 Bills come every month.\u00a0\u00a0 Some people seem to revel in keeping up, whisking through stuff quickly and accurately.\u00a0 I’m not one of those people.<\/p>\n

Besides, I have other real (e.g. kind of work that, when done, is done) work to do.\u00a0 I have speeches to write, two of them.\u00a0\u00a0 I have a story to write for the second anthology, one of them.\u00a0\u00a0 I have the new whatever-it-is book to figure out.\u00a0 So far, with all the other stuff pressing in on me, nothing is moving much in the potential-book area.\u00a0 I’m hoping the coming train rides will shake something loose, but I’m not having luck writing with the iPad yet.\u00a0 A yellow tablet will accompany me.<\/p>\n

(Aside: As I’ve explained more than once–ahem–it will NOT be a Serrano-Suiza book.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 That group of books was straining its original foundation when I finished it–and yes, it is finished.\u00a0\u00a0 I do not have any<\/em> of the reference material I had when I wrote it–I considered the series finished and done, and tossed it.\u00a0 It would take more time than I have to dig back through the books and And it belongs to my former publisher.\u00a0\u00a0 Considerate and helpful as Baen Books have been about coordinating with Del Rey to have the earlier Paksworld books they published available alongside the new group from Del Rey, I cannot expect them to do the same for all my stuff.\u00a0 Not fair to them.\u00a0\u00a0 Yes, I know a lot of people really liked those books.\u00a0 Yes, I like a lot of the characters.\u00a0 Yes, there are more potential stories in that universe.\u00a0\u00a0 That’s the sign of a good fictional universe, IMO.\u00a0\u00a0 The main character arcs of the original main cast–the three-generations thing (the elders, the middle-aged, the young)–is complete.\u00a0\u00a0 Lives go on past the end of a story-arc.\u00a0 So no, I’m not writing them as books; I might dip into them for short fiction.\u00a0 Might.)<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, there’s a stack on the desk to be dealt with today, and a pile of stuff in the computer, business communications, that also needs to be dealt with today.\u00a0 I’ve already made a trip to City Hall this morning; the trip to the bank and the post office will come shortly.\u00a0\u00a0 (Checking time–yes, the mail should be in the boxes in the post office by now.\u00a0\u00a0 I need to get back on the bike.\u00a0 And remember to take my purse this time, because I should get to the bank…no, wait, I need to write a check to put in the mail when I pick up the mail.\u00a0 And at the bank I’ll need A, B, C with me.\u00a0 And don’t forget to carry water along.\u00a0 Etc.)<\/p>\n

Hoping that now the biopsy report’s come back clear, the new book will germinate and stick up some leaves so I can identify it and tell Agent to tell Editor we have a live one again.<\/p>\n
