{"id":1880,"date":"2013-06-21T20:19:00","date_gmt":"2013-06-22T02:19:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.paksworld.com\/blog\/?p=1880"},"modified":"2013-06-21T20:19:28","modified_gmt":"2013-06-22T02:19:28","slug":"horse-stuff-canter-and-hand-gallop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.paksworld.com\/blog\/?p=1880","title":{"rendered":"Horse Stuff: Canter and Hand Gallop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I thought I&#8217;d done a post awhile back (too far back maybe) about horse gaits, but maybe it&#8217;s time for another one.\u00a0\u00a0 I do try to keep the horse stuff at a generalist level, but may not have.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TnYFtjqyko0\">Here&#8217;s a pretty good video<\/a> of someone working a horse at canter, then hand gallop, then canter, and finally at trot.\u00a0\u00a0 What you should notice (and this canter is just slow enough you can see it in the video) is the three clean beats:\u00a0\u00a0 the strike-off hind leg starts the first canter stride, then the other hind and diagonal front come down together, and finally the second front leg comes down just before the moment when all four hooves are off the ground&#8211;the moment of suspension.<\/p>\n<p>This is a working canter or maybe medium canter, not a slow collected canter or a faster extended canter.\u00a0\u00a0 When the rider asks him to move on into a hand gallop, you can see that the diagonal pair are no longer together&#8230;it&#8217;s a four-beat gait (you can hear that as he comes past the photographer.)\u00a0\u00a0 You can also see that the horse is not completely cooperative as he gets faster into the hand gallop (tries to poke his nose out and evade control.)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In the comments, the rider points out that this is a reconditioning ride after injury.\u00a0 Nice moving horse, though.<\/p>\n<p>Notice that in the trot (a good working trot or possibly not quite as good medium trot)\u00a0 the legs move in diagonal pairs and in this case the horse is &#8220;tracking up&#8221;&#8211;the hind hooves are hitting the ground where the front hooves just were.\u00a0\u00a0 This means the horse is using his abs and lifting his back some.\u00a0 The rider is posting to the trot to make that a little easier.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a video of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.equestrianlife.com\/videos\/watch\/467\/The_Collected_&amp;_Extended_Canter\">slow collected canter and an extended canter.\u00a0 <\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I thought I&#8217;d done a post awhile back (too far back maybe) about horse gaits, but maybe it&#8217;s time for another one.\u00a0\u00a0 I do try to keep the horse stuff at a generalist level, but may not have.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[29],"tags":[90],"class_list":["post-1880","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-background","tag-horses"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.paksworld.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1880"}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.paksworld.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.paksworld.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.paksworld.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.paksworld.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=1880"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"http:\/\/www.paksworld.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1880\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":1882,"href":"http:\/\/www.paksworld.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1880\/revisions\/1882"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/www.paksworld.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=1880"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.paksworld.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=1880"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/www.paksworld.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=1880"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
