When:\u00a0 Night.\u00a0 The Lyonyan force is camped alongside a scathefire track<\/p>\n

At the north side of the camp, Kieri found the sentries with bows drawn, facing a group of soldiers in a curious mix of uniforms.<\/p>\n

“They say they’re Halverics,” one of the sentries said without looking away from his target.\u00a0 “But they could have stolen what Halveric gear they wear.”<\/p>\n

“Who commands?” he asked<\/p>\n

“I do, m’lord,” said the one in front.\u00a0 “Vardan, second sergeant.”<\/p>\n

The name was right, and her accent pure Lyonyan, but her face was so streaked with ash and blood that Kieri didn’t recognize her, and she wore a wide neck ring over the leather gorget with the Halveric stamp.\u00a0 “What happened to your uniforms?” he asked.<\/p>\n

“Burned off, m’lord,”\u00a0 the woman said.\u00a0 “There was that fire–purple-white it was, it burned–”<\/p>\n
