{"id":102,"date":"2009-01-19T00:37:44","date_gmt":"2009-01-19T06:37:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.paksworld.com\/blog\/?p=102"},"modified":"2009-01-19T00:37:44","modified_gmt":"2009-01-19T06:37:44","slug":"progressbut-not-in-words","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.paksworld.com\/blog\/?p=102","title":{"rendered":"Progress&#8230;but not in words"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My artist friend Jen handed over the digital version of the title block design for the Paksworld website and I got to play with coloring\u00a0 inside the lines.\u00a0 Jen worked from my very crude design, done with a rollerball pen on graph paper, and made it beautiful.<\/p>\n<p>The challenge was to find a design that would scale up and down and still evoke the complexity of the world I&#8217;m writing in.\u00a0\u00a0 We started over a month ago (before Jen was called in) and I started showing sketches to my web designer.\u00a0\u00a0 This produced a series of encounters\u00a0 that went roughly like this:<\/p>\n<p>Me: &#8220;See this?\u00a0 Isn&#8217;t it gorgeous?\u00a0 I want something like *this* bit right here, but mixed with this other thing over there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Webguru:\u00a0 &#8220;Do you have any idea how many pixels that takes?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Me: &#8220;But it looks good&#8211;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Webguru: &#8220;But it won&#8217;t when it&#8217;s reduced to the size that will fit on the monitor&#8211;all these little curlicue things will lose pixels and you&#8217;ll have white spots&#8211;and what color did you want?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Me: (blithely) &#8220;Oh, I was going to sort of paint it, you know, make it all brilliant colors and shading and&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Webguru:\u00a0 (sound of headdesk) &#8220;Remember what I told you about *scalability???*&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Me:\u00a0 (sullenly)\u00a0 Well&#8230;all right.\u00a0\u00a0 Let me think&#8230;oh, look, how about this&#8230;and then I could add these little bits&#8211;they&#8217;re not as ornate as those others&#8211;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Webguru:\u00a0 (voice beginning to show strain) &#8220;Remember about the number of pixels?\u00a0 Scaling up and down?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Me: &#8220;Well, yes, but&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Etc.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not yet finished (which *shade* of gold should this bit be?\u00a0 The blog &#8220;gold&#8221; is greener than the &#8220;gold&#8221; I was playing with earlier&#8211;do we want a cooler or warmer overall design? \u00a0 Is the green too dark\/light?\u00a0 Should this part of the design be metallic?\u00a0 Raised?\u00a0 Etc.)\u00a0 but we&#8217;re closing in and the new title block should be done realsoonnow.<\/p>\n<p>It will have colors&#8211;nice strong vibrant colors but not ones that scream at you.\u00a0\u00a0 (In other words, no turquoise\/orange, or hot pink\/orange\/sulfur yellow combinations.)\u00a0\u00a0 It will have a border.\u00a0\u00a0 The hints of Italianate foliage are gone but the hints of Viking are still there, especially in the corner blocks.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 (Personally, I was hoping to combine\u00a0 design elements that picked up on all the cultures involved, but that might be just a tad ambitious even if the problem of vectors and scaling and so on weren&#8217;t involved&#8230;)\u00a0\u00a0 Eventually, the site will also have some incidental artwork that doesn&#8217;t need to be scalable, but that&#8217;s down the road.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll tell you (I&#8217;ll be jumping up and down going &#8220;Lookit!\u00a0 Lookit!&#8221;)\u00a0 when the new design&#8217;s up and live.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My artist friend Jen handed over the digital version of the title block design for the Paksworld website and I got to play with coloring\u00a0 inside the lines.\u00a0 Jen worked from my very crude design, done with a rollerball pen on graph paper, and made it beautiful.
